What is the definition discrimination?
As society, we’ve come a long ways in our efforts to eradicate discrimination. We are not perfect but we have made great strides since our past. Even the poor, who are a class that is often criticized, continue to do so. The classification itself is insulting. Of course, no one wants to be poor, but somehow there seems to be more shame attached because this classification is often thought of as self-inflicted.
As Americans, we are taught that your destiny is in your own hands. You can choose to be a president, a prostitute or a drug addict, a senator, or a construction worker. But, is it that simple? It’s a nice idea. We can all “self-made men” because we have so much power over our lives. And, if we fail? We are the only ones to blame. We are not clever, crafty, or diligent enough. The experiment involved giving a child a marshmallow, then leaving them alone. The child was told that if he did not eat it, he would receive another one when the scientist returned. If he ate it, a new marshmallow would be given to him. The study showed that children who waited for the second marshmallow had a better life. Scientists concluded that these children had higher education and better-paying jobs, which led them to believe that children with greater willpower would be more successful. What is the rest to the story? Scientists were unable to replicate the 1970s study. They found that socioeconomics played a major role in whether children waited to eat the second marshmallow.
