Tampa Student Loan and Bankruptcy Attorney Blog — January 2, 2024
Despite lots of changes in the landscape allowing the discharge of both federal and private student loan debt under the right circumstances, many people still believe that student debt survives a bankruptcy.
Private loans follow very different rules then federal as you probably know.
One thing I haven’t written much about are private loans for these vocational schools such as those for coding, helicopter, cosmetology etc. If the school is NOT on the federal Title IV list for the years of attendance, those are dischargeable in a bankruptcy.
Where to find the list?
Current:
If you are looking for past years, google federal school code and the year(s) you attended.
- For instance search “federal school code 2009”: You’ll find a summary of participating schools for the 2008-2009 period. Then search the list for your school. If your school is NOT on the list for the year(s) you attended, then the debt may be dischargeable in a bankruptcy.
If you are in the Tampa Bay area, including Hardee, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties, then please reach out to us to see if a bankruptcy filing will discharge your PRIVATE student loan debt. Federal student loan debt may also be discharged. We have some videos up about that here:
