San Diego County Takes Steps to Protect Immigrants Before Trump’s Inauguration – Visa Lawyer Blog – January 2, 2025

The measure was passed ahead of President Trump’s inauguration and ends the cooperation between law-enforcement agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Prior to San Diego’s action, the America First Legal Foundation, founded by Stephen Miller, sent a letter to all 249 elected officials, including Nora Vargas, Chair of the San Diego Board of Supervisors. Vargas resigned from her position citing security and concerns for her personal safety. Vargas resigned her position citing concerns for her safety and security. However, San Diego County Sheriff Kelly Martinez refused to comply with the Board’s decision and said that she would continue to work with ICE to notify them about the release of people of interest. As the Trump administration takes office, they might pursue legal avenues in order to ensure that San Diego County and other Sanctuary Cities comply with their demands. What’s certain is that the courts will need to step in and resolve these issues.

Plans for mass deportations could soon lead the federal government to push state officials to cooperate.
