A MoveOn.org online petition calls for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to resign from the high court or face impeachment.
The liberal group’s petition has more than 1 million signatures.
The Hill and Salon have stories.
The petition cites Thomas’ recent concurrence in which he called for reconsideration of precedents establishing a right to contraception in marriage, establishing a right to same-sex marriage and striking down a criminal ban on sodomy. He issued the concurrence in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the June 24 decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and the right to abortion.
The petition also cites Thomas’ Jan. 19 dissent, when the Supreme Court refused to block release of White House records to the Jan. 6, 2021, committee at the request of former President Donald Trump. Thomas didn’t recuse himself, even though his wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, had voiced support for efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
