Among the winners of the 2024 MacArthur Foundation fellowships, commonly known as “genius grants,” are a law professor who studies racial inequities and a researcher who studies the impact of technology on intimate partner abuse.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced 22 fellows Tuesday who will each receive no-strings-attached grants of $800,000 paid over five years, report the New York Times and the Associated Press.
The winners include:
* Dorothy Roberts, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. Her work has exposed the racial injustices embedded in health and social services systems. She told the New York Times that one of the topics of her writing was the prosecution of Black pregnant women for drug use. This kind of recognition has been very rewarding. Not just for me, but for all people, especially Black Women, who have been devalued by these systems.” Dell studied the techniques used by domestic abusers in order to spy on their intimate partners. Dell co-founded The Clinic to End Tech Abuse. According to the MacArthur Foundation, the group is staffed by volunteers who “check survivors’ devices for spyware, untangle joint accounts, provide other forms of safety and privacy guidance,” She co-authored in 2023 a book that provides an overview on right to farm laws. Ashwood discovered that although the laws were intended to protect family farms they have been used to boost profits by agricultural corporations. Wong founded the Disability Visibility Project to “amplify unfiltered voices of people with disabilities and explore the intersections between race, ethnicity and gender identity,” according the MacArthur Foundation. She has also drawn attention to policies that negatively affect people with disabilities. These include bans on drinking straws, and health care systems without masks.
