IPWatchdog’s Life Science Masters 2022, Cybersecurity Efforts at the DHS and Quarterly Update on Chinese IP Law Developments
This week in Washington IP news, both houses of Congress remain quiet during regularly scheduled work periods, but IPWatchdog debuts its new headquarters in Ashburn, VA with Life Science Masters 2022 on Monday and Tuesday. In Seoul, South Korea, the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation’s Global Trade and Innovation Policy Alliance hosts a two-day summit to focus on strengthening strategic ties in innovation economies among member countries. ITIF also hosts an event this week to explore the upcoming COP 27 climate change conference and how stronger innovation policies can lead foreign governments to meeting climate commitments established at this meeting. Elsewhere, the Center for Strategic & International Studies hosts a pair of events taking a look at cybersecurity efforts within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, while the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office hosts a regular quarterly update of recent legislative and case law developments on intellectual property in China.

LEO Satellite Constellations: Why Smart Sharing Rules Matter in Space

Major tech firms including SpaceX and Amazon have developed plans to offer wireless broadband networks by satellites located in low earth orbit (LEO) space. While such satellite constellations could greatly improve access to wireless broadband, they also create concerns about crowded spectrum as well as space debris, as these constellations could include tens of thousands of satellites. This event will feature a discussion on how best to shape LEO satellite policies to ensure safety and spectrum sharing with a panel including Julie Zoller, Head of Global Regulatory Affairs, Amazon’s Project Kuiper; David Goldman, Senior Director of Satellite Policy, SpaceX; Whitney Lohmeyer, Assistant Professor of Engineering, Olin College of Engineering; and Harold Feld, Senior Vice President, Public Knowledge. 2022 Global Trade and Innovation Policy Alliance Summit

The Global Trade and Innovation Policy Alliance (GTIPA) is a coalition of global policy institutes, led by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation (ITIF), supporting liberalized trade policies and government support of innovation economies. The first day of this two-day GTIPA summit will feature keynote addresses on trade challenges facing the international community by Robert Atkinson, President, ITIF; and Gwangdoo Kim, President, ifs POST. Those keynote remarks will be broadcast live on ITIF’s website. Panel discussions on the first day of the summit will focus on adapting innovation policies to the era of Great Transition, strengthening strategic alliances among GTIPA member countries, addressing supply chain issues that have developed since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and converting economies to cleaner sources of renewable energy. The sole event of the summit’s second and final day is a two-hour roundtable event discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the innovation and entrepreneurship environment in South Korea.

The Biden Administration has taken several actions to help improve the nation’s resilience to cyberattacks, especially those targeting critical energy and transportation infrastructure. DHS Cyber Priorities for the Coming Year: A Conversation with Under Secretary Rob Silvers

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is responsible for implementing much of the Executive Branch’s strategy on defending the United States from cybersecurity risks. Among DHS’ new initiatives on cybersecurity this year include the establishment of the Cyber Safety Review Board this February, which was created by an executive order from the Biden Administration and will assess significant cyber events in order to discover vulnerabilities to be addressed by the wider security community.
