DISCRIMINATION AGENDA II
The system is rigged to keep the poor in poverty. The system is rigged against the poor. There are many examples. Take, for example, the city’s determination that winter parking should be on the opposite side of the street. Who needs to park on the street? Those who don’t have a garage or driveway. Imagine that you have to move the 2001 Toyota every single day from November until April. It is an inconvenience, but one day, it won’t start. You’ve tried jumping the vehicle with no success, and you don’t have the money to repair it, let alone tow it anywhere. It sits there and collects ticket after ticket until the city tows it. You are now in the city, paying thousands of dollars that you don’t have, without a car. While you are paying daily fees for the impound lot, you continue to accrue late fees on unpaid tickets.
The moral of the story is that if you’re poor, the system will keep you there. We also teach as a culture that you can make your own fortune if you work hard. It is true that people have succeeded, but the journey was not easy. I’m saying that we all deserve to take a break. People are not in control of the things and events that happen to them. We must be forgiving to each other and ourselves.
