Daily Memphian Interviews Mason on Peak Time for Divorce Filing

Early January is a peak time for filing for divorce, attorneys say. But there’s also a surge in March, possibly prompted by Valentine’s Day disappointments.

The heightened joy of the season, however, eventually gives way to the dreary cold of winter. Right after the winter holidays is peak divorce-filing season, according to experts.

“They’ve had enough,” said Miles Mason, a Memphis-based veteran divorce attorney.

Mason said divorce filings are high in January because many spouses wait until after Christmas so as not to ruin the festivities for their families.
