In the current way our society is structured, the rich are exemplified as the model American, no matter how they obtained their wealth: inheritance, lying, cheating, evading taxes and the poor are vilified regardless of how they got there: mental health issues, medical limitations, inadequate and unfair wages, and the poverty trap.
Living in Minnesota we have some unique obstacles regarding surviving our severe winters. But some obstacles are societally induced and unfairly imposed. For example in the city of Minneapolis there is not only limited parking but in combination with winter parking and remembering when to move your vehicle it can be more than just an annoyance, it can be costly. And who is predominately having to park on the streets? Those without driveways and parking lots, in other words the less affluent. And because of this, this subsect of society will be more inclined to be ticketed and are less likely to have the funds to pay the ticket, which will ultimately result in greater fines. Society is punishing people for being poor and then punishing them further for being so poor they cannot pay the original fine.
Cities also have issues with supplying healthy and affordable food to residences. Minneapolis has food deserts. This happens when the groceries stores are not located in poorer neighborhoods which can make it difficult for residences to obtain affordable and healthy food. Driving long distances with unreliable vehicles or having to take the bus while trying to carry groceries for a family of four can be nearly impossible. The rich can afford to travel easily outside the city, and the poor are stuck within the city limits with less food options and higher food prices.
There is societal shame and stigma associated with being poor, and coupled with society’s unforgiving nature it can difficult to move to a different station in life. And it can be difficult to reach out for help, and receive that help without judgement.
