Celebrating Wisdom and Legacy during Older Americans Month This May
In a society that often glorifies youth, it is important to remember to honor those who have traveled further down life’s road. Older Americans Month, observed annually in May, provides an opportunity to do just that by celebrating the invaluable contributions, resilience, and wisdom of our seniors. This month-long celebration is not just about acknowledging their age but recognizing the richness they bring to our communities and the lessons they impart to future generations. With that in mind, please join the Indianapolis attorneys at Frank & Kraft in celebrating wisdom and legacy during Older Americans Month this May.
The History of Older Americans Month
When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday and about a third of older Americans lived in poverty. At that time, there were few programs to meet their needs but interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. Consequently, President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens declared May to be “Older Americans Month,” a time to appreciate the vitality and achievements of older adults across the United States. The theme varies each year, highlighting different aspects of aging and the senior experience. The theme for 2024 is “Powered by Connection” which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being.
What to Focus on during Older Americans Month
One of the most significant aspects of Older Americans Month is its emphasis on intergenerational connections. It is an excellent time to bridge the gap between generations, fostering understanding, respect, and appreciation for each other’s experiences. Intergenerational activities, such as storytelling sessions, mentorship programs, and community service projects involving both older adults and youth, help build stronger bonds and combat ageism.
Older Americans Month is also a time to address the challenges faced by seniors and advocate for their rights and well-being. Issues such as elder abuse, healthcare access, social isolation, and financial security are often highlighted this month, prompting discussions and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for older adults.
How Can I Get Involved in Older Americans Month?
The Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM) each May. According to the ACL, some ways you can participate in Older Americans Month include:
- Share facts about the mental, physical, and emotional health benefits of social connection and how it contributes to overall well-being.
- Promote resources that help older adults engage, like community events, social clubs, and volunteer opportunities.
- Connect older adults with local services, such as transportation, that can help them overcome obstacles to achieving or maintaining meaningful relationships.
- Encourage partners to host a connection-centric event or program focused on older adult mentors to youth, peer-to-peer support, or similar efforts.
- Challenge professional and personal networks to prioritize meaningful social connections and share the benefits.
- Inspire older adults to share what connection means to them on social media using the hashtag #PoweredByConnection.
