Specifically, Discover is getting out of the private student loan business. Fully. They send letters to borrowers who are in bankruptcy stating that they will forgive the loans.

What is this? Well, I’d want to take advantage of the situation immediately and file for bankruptcy to make money. I expect that someone will buy their portfolio. Why not get an order from the court that this debt is gone as soon as possible? Remember that debts forgiven before December 31, 2015 are tax-free federally. Debts discharged through bankruptcy are also tax-free. This is a big deal. This is a great opportunity. Please don’t waste it. I think that if you wait until the end of the year, the market imbalance will be resolved in some way and you’ll still be on the hook.
