Antitrust in 2024 was marked by evolving policy developments, vigorous enforcement, and eye-catching court decisions. In the U.S. an aggressive enforcement strategy led to unpredictability in merger review processes across sectors. In the EU enforcement of the Digital Markets Act has intensified scrutiny of digital platforms. A landmark ruling in the Illumina/GRAIL case clarified the scope and jurisdiction of the EU Commission. The Competition and Markets Authority in the UK cleared the Vodafone/Three merge with behavioral remedies. This is a significant departure from the CMA’s historic practice of requiring structural remedies. In 2025, there will be new antitrust leadership in the U.S. and Europe. The U.S. is expected to return to its traditional antitrust approach under the Trump Administration. Europe will continue to enforce the digital rules and bring AI cases with a focus to promote growth in the clean tech and AI sector.
