AI For IRS Research, And A Robot Tax Plan

IRS wants an AI operations platform. TaxNotes reports (paywall) that the IRS is researching artificial intelligence (AI) operations platforms for use by the Office of Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics. It seeks a commercial, off-the-shelf platform, license, and 24-hour customer support services.

Meanwhile, a robot tax is proposed in New York State. Democratic Assemblyman Pat Burke has introduced a bill that would tax companies that cut jobs because of their use of automation, artificial intelligence or other technology. The new tax would be based on the state income tax, state unemployment insurance, and local occupational taxes that had been collected from the affected employees.

Arkansas’s new lower tax rate goes into effect next month. Some state taxpayers will be eligible for a tax cut and a one-time tax credit of $150. Corporations will pay a 4.8 percent tax rate on earnings above $11,000, down from 5.1 percent. The new tax rate of 4.4 percent on individual income applies to those who earn between $24,300 and $87,000, down from 4.7 percent. Those who earn up to $89,600 could get a one-time, nonrefundable tax credit of $150.

Report: Large property tax increase in Wisconsin cushioned by boost in two state tax credits. The Wisconsin Policy Forum reviewed preliminary data from the state’s Department of Revenue and projects a 4.7 percent increase in net property taxes. That’s the largest increase since 2007. However, increases in two state tax credits included in the 2023-2025 budget will likely lower that increase to between 2 and 3 percent.
