The ABA is urging the U.S. Senate to vote against an immigration reform bill that would require the detention of noncitizens who committed “certain low-level offenses.”
In a Jan. 16 letter, ABA President Bill Bay said S. 5, also known as the Laken Riley Act, contains “deeply concerning” provisions. The Laken Riley Act would also grant states unlimited access in challenging federal immigration policies and release decisions in individual cases. Bay said. This could lead to “endless litigation,” and hinder the federal government’s ability in the future to implement effective immigration policies. The bill is named after a Georgia nursing student who was killed by a Venezuelan man in the U.S. without legal status, according to NBC News.
