Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders and Locke Lord are in merger talks to create a law firm that could take a spot in the Am Law 50.

The combined firm would be ranked at about No. 28, based on their combined gross revenue in 2023, Law.com reports. It would have more than 1,600 lawyers.

The firms confirmed the talks in a statement to Law.com and Reuters.

“Troutman Pepper and Locke Lord can confirm they have entered into discussions about a possible combination. Our first priority is delivering exceptional legal services to our clients, and as such, we will have no further comments at this time,” the statement said.

No merger vote of the partnerships has been scheduled yet.

Kent Zimmermann, a consultant with the Zeughauser Group, told Law.com that a merger would give the combined firm a more dominant position in several industry sectors, including energy, insurance, health care, private equity, financial services and real estate.

“It’s part of why they started talking,” Zimmermann said.
